I See Lake Martin First

I grew up in Alex City.  Highway 63, also known as Kowaliga Road, was the main route to our cabin on Lake Martin.

I see lake martin

In the days before child restraint systems we kids would stand in the back seat and hang over the front, trying to compete on who could see the lake first.  When we topped the big hill past Governor’s Island Road, which is just north of Kowaliga Bridge, we knew we were close.  The first one to spot it would scream “I see the lake!”

I have seen this view about a gajillion times since, and I think of our competition almost every time.

Haha. We played the same game going to our old lake house too John and you’re right, I still get anxious and want to blurt it out when I roll over the last hill before the great reveal.

Your story hit home with me too! I have told my children the same story and now they do the same thing, but they have added “Goodbye Lake”, when we cross the 280 Bridge, heading home.

Daniel and Jennifer- I’m glad someone else remembers those times!

also, my sister says I should have added, “with 2 bird dogs curled up in the floorboard.”

That is funny that you added that, because our Lab immediately curls up on the floorboard and sleeps all the way home every time we leave. We sometimes think that maybe we forgot her.

We did the same thing, only we would sing “I see Lake Martin!” over and over, from the moment it was first spotted until arrival. (I think that story even made it into the book.)

It had to drive my mother nuts.
