Should I Fix or Sell My Boat?

Today, I’m facing a real dilemma, and I need your advice! My trusty 2006 Cobalt 220 bowrider boat, which I’ve relied on for work and all the fun that comes with living at Lake Martin Alabama, is in trouble. The outdrive is acting up, possibly due to leaking seals. This has me asking should I fix or sell my boat?

Boat Use

I need this boat selling real estate on Lake Martin. It’s a huge part of the business and a huge part of what I do. I actually do need a boat for my work, but I’m at that funny spot where I don’t know whether to have it fixed or sell it.

Like I said, it’s been a great boat. It’s a perfect size for us. It’s 22 feet long. So, for Lake Martin that’s a perfect size to have enough capacity but also be able to ride the waves. I use it all the time in my business when checking out property, taking pictures and videos, and touring people around. Therefore, it’s a big decision for me.

I love this boat, and I would hate to have to sell it and buy another one. However, it may be time to let it go. I’m just kind of holding my breath to see what the mechanics say.

The Issue with the Boat

If it is just the seals, it could be a relatively minor fix. If not, it might mean that I have to replace both the upper and lower unit of the outdrive, which will turn into an expensive project.

I absolutely love this boat, even though it is a 2006. But is it really worth the steep repair costs? Or would it be smarter to sell it and possibly upgrade to something newer?

If you’ve dealt with pricey boat repairs like this or know the best route to take, I’d love to hear your insights. Have you had similar issues with outdrives? What could the repair process and costs look like? I’m hoping to get a better idea before making a decision.

Even though I love boats and I’m in and out of them all the time on Lake Martin, I know nothing about the mechanics of it. I’m totally helpless when it comes to this. So, any comments y’all might have to let me know if I should fix or sell my boat l’d appreciate it.
