The Big MISTAKE People Make When Moving to Lake Martin Alabama

People that want to relocate to Lake Martin sometimes make a really big mistake when moving. In this blog, I’d like to tell you what that is and give you the solution.

Lake Martin is a second home community. About 80% of waterfront homeowners have their lake home as their second home. Only 20% of waterfront owners are full-timers. 

I talk to people all the time. I showed a house to people from Arizona the other day as well as Texas and South Carolina. People come from all over the place. I even had someone from Hawaii about eight months ago. I think the biggest mistake people make when relocating to Lake Martin is they don’t think about what little town they’re going to base their life around. 

The Big Mistake

We’re in the middle of nowhere in Lake Martin right. We’re about an hour and a half to Birmingham on one side of the lake, two hours to Atlanta on another side, an hour to Montgomery, and about 45 minutes to Auburn from another part of the lake. Therefore, when you relocate here, the mistake I think people make is they don’t make the time to check out these small towns. 

There are all kinds of things you need to know about where you want to base your life. It’s a mistake to not make the time to check out each town because you need to figure out things about the town you want to live in. These things might include the following: where you’re going to shop, where you’re going to go to church, or where you’re going to go to the doctor. 

When I have people that are coming in from out of town and give me two days, I try to do as much upfront work with them as possible. I talk to them about what their real estate choices are so that we can narrow it down to probably seven or eight things to look at on one day. Then, my advice is to take a whole day and look at these small towns.

The Small Towns Around Lake Martin

The small towns that surround Lake Martin include Alexander City, or Alex City, Dadeville, and Eclectic. 

Alex City is the largest of these small towns with a population of about 15,000. So, it’s still a really small town. We just got a Publix which my wife says is the harbinger of civilization. So, she’s super excited about that. Alex City also has the Russell hospital system which has partnerships with UAB.  

Dadeville is a smaller town, but they have a lot of stuff going on there. Downtown they have a lot of restaurants. Dadeville is also close to Auburn. Therefore, a lot of people that base their lives out of Dadeville will go and do major shopping and medical stuff in Auburn. That being said, Dadeville also has Renfro grocery store and Lake Martin Grocery. 

Eclectic is a small town by my standards, because I’m from a small town. However, they don’t have as much retail as Dadeville. Eclectic is also 30 minutes away from Montgomery.

That’s kind of the differences in the three small towns that surround Lake Martin. Also, to just give you an idea, it’s going to take you a couple of hours to drive all the way around Lake Martin. For instance, if you’re on the east side, then it will take you about an hour and 15 minutes to drive to the west side of the lake. 

Therefore, I think it’s really important to spend at least half of your time on your first trip to Lake Martin trying to figure out the small towns. Go downtown to these little towns, and scope it out. See what you think.
