Kowaliga Restaurant is the oldest and most famous waterfront restaurant on Lake Martin. It’s one of those places that almost every lake visitor ends up at sooner or later. If you’re planning a visit this season, there are a few updates to Kowaliga Restaurant and a handful of pro tips that will make your trip a little easier.

Slow Down Under the Kowaliga Bridge

The biggest change isn’t actually at the restaurant. It’s the new idle speed only rule under the Kowaliga Bridge. For most of my life you could zip right under that bridge, but those days are over.

Water patrol keeps a close eye on that area because it’s one of the busiest spots on the lake. If you’re heading to Kowaliga by boat, slow down and stay at idle speed until you’re through the bridge. It’ll save you an expensive conversation with the marine police.

You Can’t Feed the Ducks Anymore

For years, families fed the ducks, turtles, fish, and geese around the restaurant. That tradition has come to an end because of updated wildlife regulations. If you bring the kids, let them enjoy watching the animals instead of feeding them.

Kowaliga Is Now Open on Wednesdays

One update many people may have missed is the restaurant’s schedule. Beginning in May, Kowaliga opens on Wednesdays for the busy season. That gives everyone one more night each week to enjoy dinner on the water.

My Favorite Docking Tip

Docking in front of Kowaliga can make some boaters nervous. It’s busy, there are usually waves rolling through, and it feels like everyone is watching while you park. If that’s you, don’t worry because there’s an easier option.

Instead of pulling up to the main docks, ease over to the marina docks. There’s a walkway and staircase that lead directly to the restaurant from there. You’ll have more room, less pressure, and an easier time tying up your boat.

Waterfront Restaurants Add Value

One thing buyers consistently tell me is they want a lake house where they can boat to dinner. That’s one of the reasons waterfront restaurants like Kowaliga make nearby neighborhoods more desirable. Communities like Trillium, Little Kowaliga, Willow Point, Parker Creek, and much of Kowaliga Bay all benefit from being close to this restaurant.

If you’re selling a home nearby, don’t overlook that feature. Access to places like Kowaliga absolutely contributes to the Lake Martin lifestyle buyers are looking for. That’s part of what makes owning here so much fun.

Should You Bring Your Dog?

I love dogs and mine goes almost everywhere with me on the boat. Kowaliga just isn’t one of those places. Dogs aren’t allowed on the grassy waiting area, and during the summer the restaurant is usually busy enough that it makes things more difficult.

My advice is simple. Leave your dog at home, give him a spoonful of peanut butter, and come enjoy the evening. You’ll have a much more relaxing experience.

Parking and Waiting Tips

Even on busy days, I always drive by the parking area before assuming it’s full. More often than not, I can find an open spot close to the restaurant. It’s worth taking a quick look before parking farther away.

If you’re arriving by boat with a group, drop someone off at the dock first. Let them get in line while you finish tying the boat up. That way you’re not losing ten minutes waiting on the dock while everyone else gets ahead of you.

What I Order Every Time

If I’m ordering a sandwich, I’m getting the blackened catfish po’boy. It’s my favorite thing on the menu, and I order it almost every visit. If you’ve never tried it, start there.

My wife never skips the onion rings. They’ve been famous since the old Kowaliga location and they’re still one of the restaurant’s signature appetizers. They’re huge, crispy, and come with several dipping sauces.

One of my newer favorites is the Conecuh sausage appetizer. They serve it with pimento cheese, crackers, and Wickles Pickles, which are both Alabama favorites. If you’re introducing someone to local food, that’s a great place to start.

Grab a Local Beer

These days I’m usually ordering an IPA. Kowaliga does a great job carrying several Alabama craft beers, and I like trying whichever local IPA is on tap. Years ago I would’ve ordered a frozen margarita, but my tastes have changed a little over time.

A Little Hank Williams History

Kowaliga has a fascinating connection to Hank Williams Sr. You’ll find memorabilia throughout the restaurant because he spent time here while staying nearby at my great-uncle’s cabin. Local history says he wrote “Kaw-Liga” here and finished “Your Cheatin’ Heart” during one of those visits.

If you’re interested in that history, Children’s Harbor also has a small Hank Williams museum that’s worth visiting. It’s another reminder that Lake Martin has stories around every corner if you know where to look.
