One of my earliest memories of Lake Martin is to remember the sailboat regattas that Dixie Sailing Club used to have in Kowaliga Bay. One was called the “Poor ol’ Kowaliga Regatta.”
The club is now located in Young’s Basin. But back then they were located where part of The Ridge is now. I could look up and see the sailboat races from my parent’s cabin in Kowaliga Bay.
They also had some really big races. Back in the late 70s or early 80s they had the U.S. National Finals for the Sunfish class of sailboat. My dad and some of his friends even sailed in it.
The National Finals race was a really big deal and I can remember them making T-shirts. Back then we didn’t just make T-shirts at the drop of a hat, such was the technology. So it was a really big deal to a younger kid.
Dixie Sailing Club has been a big part of Lake Martin tradition. On Sunday, June 3rd, they are giving a FREE introduction to sailing class. It’ll be a great way to learn a lot about a really cool pastime. Call the event coordinator, Keith, at 334-324-9383 to register and for more information.
