If you’ve ever tried to launch a boat at Kowaliga on a summer weekend, you already know the problem. Kowaliga is one of the busiest boat ramps on Lake Martin, and for years the demand has outgrown the available space. That’s why so many people are excited about the Kowaliga boat ramp expansion project that’s underway.

Kowaliga sits along a major corridor on Highway 63 and serves one of the oldest and most popular areas of Lake Martin. There wasn’t much parking, and on busy Saturdays boats and trailers would line the highway just waiting for access. On major holiday weekends, traffic could become a major jam.

A Second Ramp and a Better Layout

One of the biggest changes is the addition of a second boat ramp. Many people don’t realize that the old Highway 63 and Kowaliga Bridge alignment used to run through this area before the current bridge configuration existed. The new ramp sits on the opposite side of that old highway location.

The redesign also improves the overall layout. The additional launch area should help move boats more efficiently and reduce the bottlenecks that people have dealt with for years.

Safer Access from Highway 63

The improvements aren’t just about launching boats faster. They’re also about making the area safer for everyone who uses it.

Previously, drivers heading north across Kowaliga Bridge had to make a difficult left turn into the ramp area near the bridge. The new entrance sits farther north, giving drivers more room and better visibility.

Drivers heading south toward the bridge will also benefit from a new dedicated turn lane. That lane allows vehicles pulling boats to enter the ramp more safely and with less disruption to through traffic.

Expanded Parking Improves Safety

To me, one of the most important improvements is the parking expansion. The old parking area simply couldn’t handle the number of people using the ramp.

The new design adds multiple rows of trailer parking and significantly increases capacity. That matters because people previously parked up and down Highway 63, creating safety concerns for both drivers and boaters.

The area around the ramp is hilly, and vehicles often crest those hills while pulling trailers. Removing parked vehicles from the roadside should make a big difference in overall safety.

How the Expansion Project Came Together

While filming at Kowaliga, I ran into Elmore County Commissioner Brad Davis and asked him about the project. Davis represents District 2, which includes Lake Martin in Elmore County, and he explained how the effort came together.

According to Davis, local leaders recognized that the boat ramp had become a serious safety concern. On busy weekends, trailers lined the highway, creating risks for both travelers and boat owners trying to launch and retrieve boats.

The project became possible through a partnership between Russell Lands, Elmore County, and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Russell donated property adjacent to the existing ramp, while grant funding helped make the expansion possible.

Phase One: New Ramp, Parking, and Infrastructure

Phase one includes the paved parking areas, expanded infrastructure, and the additional boat ramp. The excavation work has already been completed, and the project includes new docks and wake-reduction features.

These improvements will allow boaters to launch, move their boats out of the way, and retrieve trailers more efficiently. Previously, there was very little room to stage boats after launching, which often created backups at the ramp.

The expanded layout should increase efficiency and make the entire launch process smoother for everyone involved.

Phase Two: New Restrooms

The next phase includes restroom facilities at the site. Elmore County plans to fund that portion of the project.

For a heavily used public access point, restroom facilities are a welcome addition. They improve the experience for visitors and make the ramp more practical for families and tournament anglers alike.

Phase Three: A Pavilion for Tournaments and Events

The final phase includes construction of a pavilion overlooking the lake. The Department of Conservation plans to fund that portion of the project.

The pavilion will provide a gathering place for fishing tournaments and weigh-ins. It will also create a public space where visitors can enjoy some of the best views in the Kowaliga area.

As someone who’s spent a lifetime around Lake Martin, I think that’s a great addition. There aren’t many public-access locations where people can gather and enjoy a vista like this.

What This Means for Lake Martin Visitors

Even if you never fish a tournament, the expanded Kowaliga Boat Ramp gives you another excellent place to start your day on Lake Martin. Better parking, safer access, additional launch capacity, and future amenities all make the area more useful for residents and visitors alike.

If you’re watching this a year from now, there’s a good chance you’ll simply take these improvements for granted. That’s usually the sign of a successful infrastructure project—it quietly makes life better for everyone who uses it.

What Kowaliga Boat Ramp Expansion Means for Nearby Property Owners

A lot of people have asked whether the improvements could affect nearby property values. That’s a reasonable question considering how much activity already takes place in the Kowaliga area.

The neighborhoods closest to the ramp include Trillium, Willow Point, The Willows, Willow Glynn, Glynmere, The Ridge, Windermere, Windover, Windover West, and many of the homes around Kowaliga Bay, Little Kowaliga, and Parker Creek. For property owners in those areas, improved public access and safer infrastructure are certainly worth paying attention to.

Why Kowaliga Matters to Me

I have a soft spot in my heart for Kowaliga. My dad’s cabin is still here after three generations, and I’ve driven by this boat ramp literally my entire life.

When my sisters and I crossed Highway 63 as kids, we’d compete to be the first one to spot the lake. The place where we’d finally see it was right here at Kowaliga Bridge.

That’s why this project feels important to me. Kowaliga sits at the heart of one of the main corridors of Lake Martin, and these improvements are both needed and appreciated.

Final Thoughts

Lake Martin keeps growing every year. As that growth continues, public access areas become increasingly important. That’s why the Kowaliga boat ramp expansion is a good thing for Lake Martin.
